I was so excited and more than a tad nervous when I volunteered and was accepted to test a new sewing pattern, the Julia Pocket Top, for the Sew Me Something Emporium.
Based in Stratford upon Avon, a few miles from my childhood home, but rather more importantly the home of Shakespeare, Sew Me Something names each of their patterns after one of Shakespeare’s heroines, Julia being from The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
The Julia Pocket Top is roomy and not the type I would normally go for as I have narrow shoulders and have always thought that roomy tops tend to hang on me in a most unflattering way. BUT I’m a total convert – I love this top!
I chose a dark green/blue ponte roma, bought some months ago from Mandors Glasgow. This fabric suited the pattern although other types of knit fabric would work equally well.
All pattern instructions were clear and the pieces sewed together easily. As I’m still a bit scared of my overlocker I used my sewing machine.
Julia has two neckline options, the simple neckband version that I made or a sophisticated cowl neck version. With the aim of ensuring a good fit, I shortened the neckband by 2cm. I was pleased with the result.
The Julia pattern has some lovely features which makes it ‘stand out from the crowd’. In particular I like the wide placement of the pockets and the dropped sleeves. Most of all I love the deep sleeve cuffs.
In summary the Julia top is a straightforward make and is easy to wear with its relaxed fit and flattering shape.

Hi. Thanks very much. Necklines are usually the trickiest part and do come with practice. I’ve made quite a few tops or dresses where the neckband is too big and therefore doesn’t sit properly. I usually find I have to reduce the length of the neckband, sometimes by several inches. I always baste it in place first so it’s easier to unpick if it’s not right.
